Chapter 11

As the sun came up, Andorn got out of bed and went to the window. For a moment the moon was before him, the window facing east, and the sun clearly reflecting on it. A small sliver was missing from one side, a sign that the full moon was coming to an end. Birds chirped as if this day was any other, and already people were beginning to move about the town, the faint aroma of baking bread wafting in on a breeze.

If Andorn had been more human, the scene before him might have appealed to him. Waking up in relative safety to good food and warm, friendly faces. And while he appreciated all those things, none of them satisfied the elven part of him. He was forever divided, never belonging anywhere, it seemed. Not anymore.

But that wasn’t why he was awake early. In truth, he’d barely been able to sleep. Something about this whole task was off to him, but he couldn’t place his finger on it. All of the others had their theories. That the priest had taken Keanna seemed a likely one, but Thorgrim was adamant that the priest would be a good man.

It also made sense that Thorgrim was right. From Andorn’s understanding, the priest had looked after Phentonia and the people in it for many years. With the exception that he and Keanna had left while the butler was beginning to grow his power. Had they fled the butler, or was something else going on? One of the butler’s men had run too, something Andorn hadn’t forgotten even if his companions had appeared to.

Had that companion found the priest and Keanna and pushed the pair onwards towards greater safety? Or was the real answer to this puzzle something he’d not thought of yet?

Either way, he didn’t like the sound of the beast that the farmers had spoken of. It was clear that Sarl had thoughts on what it might be. He’d been holding back a little. But there were few beasts Andorn could think of who might scare dogs so. And he thought back to the one they’d found in the butler’s basement. A creature akin to a werewolf had been harboured there.

Had there been more than one?

Perhaps the priest and Keanna were working together.

So many questions. And still no answers.

As he was contemplating going to ask for an early breakfast and waking his companions, Andorn heard the muffled sound of Meera’s voice through the wall. Of the three rooms in a row, the girls were in the middle, Andorn on one end, and Yarlihn and Thorgrim sharing on the other side, using one of the rare rooms with two single beds in.

Smiling as he heard Meera chide Sahria yet again for not appearing to have slept for very long, Andorn neatened his clothes and went outside. He was only down one flight of stairs, to request breakfast be brought up to the table still in the hallway, when he spotted Dale, yawning as he came out of his own room.
